2018 will be the year in which lesser known and new cryptocurrencies double, or even quadruple in value. For example, 2 weeks before the end of 2017, an unknown (for some people) digital currency, called Ripple (XRP) was worth around $1. A few days into 2018, it was worth $2.45. It was released in 2012, offering instant, certain and low-cost international payments. Ripple has a market capitalization of $1.26 billion. It doesn’t require mining, which makes it different from Bitcoin and other altcoins. A quick reminder, Ripple climbed in value by nearly 4,000% through the first half of 2017. A big rise is also predicted for 2018.
The hottest digital coin so far in 2018 is Stellar, a cryptocurrency which has climbed more than 65 percent in just four days and is now one of the 10 largest cryptocurrencies by market capitalization.
By January second, Stellar had a market capitalization of $10 billion as the eighth-largest digital currency, according to CoinMarketCap. The digital coin traded 17.5 percent higher on the day near 56.4 cents, the website showed. Of course, daily fluctuations on the list are inevitable, so it might drop in value in the days to come, but it could also climb.
Stellar is a distributed, hybrid blockchain (technology that is also behind Bitcoin) that is fully open-source. It is infrastructure that exists to facilitate cross-asset transfers of value, including payments. Unlike the popular digital currency, Stellar’s transactions settle in 2 to 5 seconds and allow users to quickly exchange government-backed currencies, such as turning U.S. dollars into euros, according to its website. Stellar’s coins are officially called lumens, or XLM.
Monero is one of the safest cryptocurrencies in the world at the moment. In comparison to Bitcoin, Monero is ASIC resistant. It’s cheaper to mine – because Monero’s mining system doesn’t have the high powered demands of a cryptocurrency like Bitcoin. It also doesn’t have to battle with the same centralized monetary system as Bitcoin – so it’s more private and secure
Some other altcoins that might surge in 2018 are Neo, Litecoin. Cardano.
